We know Merrimack Valley weather in the winter can be… chilly, to say the least. It can be tempting to blast your thermostat at a comfortable temperature of 75 degrees, but that isn’t always the most energy efficient practice nor is it the best practice for saving some cash on your energy bills. In this blog post, we’ll go over five ways you can save on your heating bills this winter, using specific, expert-backed tips from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Continue reading below for our five tips on saving on your heating bills this winter.
1. Take advantage of the sun’s heat.
Open all of your windows’ curtains during the daytime to soak in the free heating from the sun. You’ll want to remember to close them when the sun goes down, though, or else you’ll cancel out any heat you retained from the daytime.
2. Don’t be afraid to bundle up.
Sweatshirts, beanies, pants and socks aren’t made for being worn just outdoors, you know. Don’t be afraid to wear these clothing items indoors to help save you some money on your heating bills! You can also bundle up in fuzzy blankets and add rugs to your floors for insulation purposes.
3. Adjust your thermostat before you go to sleep.
According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save around 10 percent on your energy bills by simply reducing your thermostat by about 10 to 15 degrees when you go to sleep or when you leave your home for the day. If it’s snowy or below freezing outside, remember to keep your thermostat at 55 degrees (at least) to prevent any of your pipes from freezing.
4. Cover any drafty windows.
If you have any windows you know will let in some outside weather draft, make sure to install insulating drapes or shades over these windows. This will help in keeping the cold air out of your home.
5. Use the natural heat from your fireplace, if you have one.
Lastly, if you have one, turn on your fireplace for some natural heat. Always remember to keep your fireplace’s damper closed when you’re not burning wood, though, or else you’ll be letting cold outdoor air into your home, reversing any warmth from your heating system.
