Anatomy of a Furnace

header

The furnace has many different parts, and each one plays an important role in the heating process. Having a better understanding of the anatomy of a furnace will help you better maintain this essential appliance and know when it’s time to call the professionals at Lamco Systems in Tyngsboro, MS, to come to take a look. Here are four parts of a furnace that every homeowner should know about.

Air Filter

The air filter in your furnace is an important safety feature. It prevents particles and dust from entering the heating system and potentially causing damage to the heating element, which can cost you a lot of money to replace or repair. To keep your furnace running safely and efficiently, it’s important to change the air filter every month or so.

Pilot Light or Electronic Ignition

Many furnaces have an electronic ignition system. This means the burner doesn’t require a pilot light and is ignited electronically. Older models still have a pilot light that must be manually lit before you can use your furnace to heat your home. While having a pilot light makes it easier to detect malfunctions, newer furnaces are more energy-efficient.

Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger looks like a large tube that runs through the center of your furnace. It is responsible for heating the air in your home by allowing natural gas or propane to be burned inside the furnace. The heat exchanger is made of metal and can become very hot, so it’s important to never touch it.

Blower Motor

The blower motor is responsible for blowing the heated air from the furnace and distributing it throughout your home. It’s located at the bottom of the furnace and can be accessed by removing the front panel. The blower motor should be cleaned regularly to ensure that your furnace is working at its best.
